Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean in The Winter

Winters in Colorado are unpredictable. Whether it snows all season long or on and off for months straight, there is one thing that you can always rely on — your house is going to be a mess. The constant change in temperature often leads to snowfall that melts and creates muddy puddles everywhere. The hot and cold fluctuations that comes with Colorado winters can make it hard to keep your home clean.

Invest In Doormats

When the snow falls and covers the ground with a beautiful and fluffy layer, you can expect puddles tracked throughout your home. If you have a mudroom, make sure every family member and their shoes enter the home through this area if possible and leave their shoes on a doormat or boot tray. This will help minimize the puddles tracked through your home and keep it all in a contained area. Adding a doormat to the outside of your front door, garage door, and even your back door can help to absorb some of the water before it comes into your home.

When the snow melts, mud will be your biggest concern. Doormats can really come in handy when mud is the issue. The strong bristles of a doormat can help remove any mud trapped on the shoes of your friends and family. Make sure people wipe their shoes off on these mats before walking inside, you will have cleaner floors and less mess!

Make New Rules

New rules can also help keep your home clean. While you allow for shoes to be worn in your home during the warmer months, this should not be allowed in the winter, especially if you want to keep your home clean. During the wet and muddy months of winter, ask your family and anyone else who finds themselves in your home to take their shoes off before coming inside. Don’t leave the shoes outside though! This will make shoes very cold and they may even freeze, which no one will be happy with. Instead, have a boot tray somewhere in your home where they can store their shoes. Even if the boot tray is right by your front door, having your guests take their shoes off outside can reduce the mud stains and puddles that will be tracked into the entryway.

Keep Towels Nearby

Keeping an old towel or a rag near the entry points of your home can make it quick and easy to wipe up the water or mud that finds its way inside. During moments when you are not expecting any guests and won’t need to be impressing anyone, you can even lay towels out on the floor to help keep your floors cleaner.

Having a towel nearby is extremely great if you have a dog. Dogs are notorious for tracking muddy pawprints through your house. Keeping a towel right by your garage door or next to the back door allows you to wipe their paws before they come back inside. You will likely want to wipe their paws outside or in the garage since they tend to collect mini snowballs in their pads. Wiping their paws will remove these snowballs and your don’t want them all over your home, melting on your floors.

Don’t Give Up

During the colder months, especially in Northern Colorado where snow seems rare but the temperatures keep dropping, it can be hard to get outside. Your entire family will find themselves spending more time inside. It is too cold to do anything outside and there is no snow to play in, so suddenly everyone is cooped up indoors. This can make it very difficult to keep up with the cleaning and clutter. But don’t give up! Make sure your family is cleaning up after themselves and pick up every afternoon so that you wake up to a clean home. Don’t let dishes pile up, don’t let laundry be forgotten, and don’t ignore the mud stains tracked across your floors.
